This black-brown solid naturally originates from the mineral pyrolusite, which is the principal ore of manganese and a component of manganese nodules. The main use of MnO2 is for dry cell batteries such as alkaline batteries and zinc-carbon batteries. MnO2 is also used as a coloring agent and as a precursor to other manganese-containing compounds such as potassium permanganate. It acts as an activator in organic processes, for example for the oxidation of allylic alcohols.
